Milan before the race

15–16 October 2026 · Base at Via Gioacchino Murat 78

One relaxed day for the cathedral quarter, Uniqlo and race supplies. Start late after the overnight arrival. Aim for 7–9 km on foot, with metro rides for the long stretches and time back at the apartment before dinner.

An easy Thursday

  1. 10:00–11:30. Breakfast near home, then Runaway, Via Ugo Bassi 22. Buy race fuel first; allow 30 minutes in the shop.
  2. Late morning. Walk to Zara station. Take M3 toward San Donato and get off at Duomo. Sit for lunch before sightseeing.
  3. 13:00–15:30. Duomo square, Galleria and Piazza della Scala, then Uniqlo Cordusio. This is a compact loop; no need to rush.
  4. Optional. Walk along Via Dante to Castello Sforzesco. See the courtyard, sit briefly, then leave from Cairoli metro.
  5. By 17:00. M1 from Cairoli toward Sesto to Duomo, then M3 toward Comasina to Maciachini. Walk home, rest, eat nearby.

Walking estimates include browsing: shops and station access about 2–3 km, the central loop 2–3 km, and home connections and dinner 2–3 km. At 9 km, head home. The shorter version ends after Uniqlo and returns from Duomo, roughly 5–7 km for the day.

Friday morning: breakfast, pack and leave for Omegna. Treat it as a travel morning, with no extra sightseeing circuit. The Omegna and Lake Orta guide covers the race weekend. See the main guide for overnight airport arrival and check-in.

A little history while you look

Duomo and its marble

Work began in 1386. The pale stone is Candoglia marble from near Lake Maggiore, a connection with your next stop. The duke granted the cathedral its quarry and free transport by water in 1387. Look up at the spires and statues before getting absorbed in the square.

Allow 20–30 minutes outside; cathedral entry is an optional ticketed visit. Leave the rooftop stairs for another trip.

Galleria and La Scala

The Galleria opened in 1867, while parts were still unfinished. Its iron and glass roof belongs to the ambitious city of newly unified Italy. Look for the mosaics beneath the central dome; the worn bull is where visitors do a good-luck heel spin.

Walk through to Piazza della Scala. The opera house looks surprisingly restrained from outside. This whole stop takes about 25 minutes and costs nothing.

Castello Sforzesco if you still feel fresh

An older Visconti fortress became the Sforza family's ducal residence. Their Renaissance court drew Leonardo da Vinci and Bramante to Milan. The courtyard gives you the scale of the place without a museum circuit. Allow 20–30 minutes. Save Brera galleries and Navigli for a longer stay.

The two shopping errands

Uniqlo Cordusio

Via Cordusio 2. A few minutes from Duomo. This is the big central store: roughly 1,500 m² over three floors, and Uniqlo's first Italian shop. Allow 45–60 minutes. Thursday listings generally show 10:00–20:00; check the live locator. There is also a Gae Aulenti branch, but Cordusio fits this route better.

Race fuel at Runaway first

Via Ugo Bassi 22. The convenient specialist near your base. Tuesday–Saturday from 10:00; plan to arrive before 19:30. Allow 30 minutes. Call +39 02 9194 9633 to check sachet and gel stock before walking over.

The catalogue in the notes lists Maurten Drink Mix 320 at €4, Mix 160 at €2.50 and caffeinated Gel 100 CAF 100 at €4.20. Gel 160 was marked sold out. These are catalogue prices, not confirmed shelf stock.

WhyRun if needed

Corso Sempione 6. The better backup for different gel flavours. Thursday hours are listed as 10:30–21:00. Call +39 02 8089 7359. Online listings do not confirm shelf stock.

The catalogue lists Enervit cherry, fruit and apple isotonic gels at €2.69, other gels around €2.59, and Maltodextrin Fructose drink powder at €16.90.

Walking there and back from the castle adds about 2.5–3 km. If you go, take a taxi directly home afterwards to keep the day below 12 km.

Breakfast and dinner near home

Distances are approximate one-way walks from Murat 78. Food budgets are estimates per person, not quoted menus. Choose one breakfast and one dinner; the farther café is an alternative, not another stop.

Breakfast at Pane Caffé

Via Gioacchino Murat 70 · 2–5 min · €4–7. The simplest choice after a short night. A neighbourhood bakery café for coffee, a brioche and something to take away. The budget covers coffee and pastry; a fuller breakfast costs more. Listings show opening from 06:00, useful on Friday too.

Listing · Walk

Or a slower breakfast at Mamusca

Via Bernardo Davanzati 2 · 15–20 min · €6–12. A café and bookshop with a family-friendly feel, worth choosing if you want to sit over breakfast rather than eat at the counter. Weekday listings show 08:00 opening. It takes you west of the direct route to Runaway, so count the detour.

Details and hours · Walk

Dinner at SPIB Pizza

Via Legnone 34 · 8–12 min · €15–22. A neighbourhood pizzeria known for very thin pizza, quite different from a thick-rimmed Neapolitan one. The budget covers pizza, water and a possible cover charge. Thursday dinner is listed as 19:00–22:30. Reserve on +39 02 603 536; takeaway is an option.

Details and hours · Walk

Or dinner at Rob de Matt

Via Enrico Annibale Butti 18 · 12–18 min · €22–35. A neighbourhood bistrot with a social inclusion project, a garden and seasonal cooking. The budget covers a main dish, a little extra and water. Thursday venue hours run from noon to 01:00; kitchen hours are shorter, so book dinner around 19:30–20:00 and check the current menu.
